About the Alliance

Strengthening Our Community Alliance is an organization that provides scholarships and community services to the Woodlawn Community and greater Chicago. The Alliance will utilize the Sigma Omega Foundation Community Center to manage foundation business including holding monthly meetings and conducting community service programs. The Alliance will also collaborate with the local community on numerous programs.

Sigma Omega Foundation (The Foundation) is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt charitable organization that provides scholarships and community services to the Woodlawn Community and greater Chicago. The mission is to uplift and improve the life of the community through educational opportunities and mentoring. The vision is to create a community in which all people thrive and develop to their greatest potential. Some of the services the foundation offers include free community health screenings, tax seminars, and facility usage. T  he Foundation has given over $10,000.00 in scholarships over the past year. The Foundation conducted an ongoing food in which 469 pounds of food for 391 quality meals was delivered to the Greater Chicago Food Depository. The Foundation also donated reading resources to the Woodlawn Elementary School and participated in the school’s literacy initiatives throughout the year. The Foundation’s latest project has been a partnership with the Illinois Department of Human Services-Division of Rehabilitation Services (IDHS/DRS). As one of six partners in the entire State of Illinois, Sigma Omega Foundation was able to provide awareness to over 100 people in Cook County about the services that IDHS/DRS provides including, vocational rehabilitation services, home services, educational services, specialized services, independent living services, disability determination services, among other opportunities. Who was Eugene Williams? The black teenager’s death sparked Chicago’s 1919 race riot, but few facts are known about Williams himself. He died in the waters of Lake Michigan on the afternoon of July 27, 1919, after a white man threw rocks at him — a tragedy that spiraled into a spate of violence lasting several days, with 38 people dead.
